Dave Mihaly’s Eastern Accents in the Far West, is delightfully far-reaching. Part free-jazz record in the grand tradition of masters like the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Ornette Coleman, the disc balances sensitive ensemble playing with melodic compositions and song structures that explore what Mihaly calls ‘instrumental color’. His collaborators in the “Shimmering Leaves Ensemble” trumpet and horn player Ara Anderson (Tom Waits, Tin Hat Trio) and saxophonist David Boyce (Broun Fellinis) create a range of textures from sparse folklore-inspired songs to lush and powerful group improvisations that sketch the simple and tuneful beauty of Mihaly’s compositions, that, perhaps unusually for a free jazz record, will stay with the listener long after the music stops playing.
